The Tuff Cities - Little Jerusalem
Pitigliano (18 km from here)
Considered one of the most beautiful villages in Tuscany. Even before you reach it, you will be struck by its remarkable beauty seeing it in the distance, perched on a volcanic tuff ridge.
In the historic center lies the Ghetto, the ancient Jewish quarter. A place rich in history and charm, where you can discover the deep cultural heritage of the Jewish community that has marked the identity of the borough.
Resuming the words of one of our dear guest and writer:
“Frontally it escapes architectural rules. How does it hold up? Impossible to assess. The human challenge to the mineral seems unrealistic: the tuff seems very fragile to hold it together.
Then, an intuition that soon became certainty: cubism was born here. Cézanne and Picasso traveled together, clandestinely, to the Maremma, and struck by this visual vertigo they shaped one of the most fruitful modern pictorial movements. No one ever knew it, but this is where it all began: an origin of the world against straight lines.”
In the evening, Pitigliano lights up: a show not to be missed!
